Superb antique tapestry from the 17th century, depicting a lively green scene, in the great tradition of the Flemish and French workshops active during this century.

In the foreground, an elegant bird (probably a goose or a stylized wader) stands out in a bucolic landscape, surrounded by lush vegetation: large foliage, shrubs and flowers in shimmering tones.

The background reveals an architectural element – a noble residence or country pavilion – which gives the scene an aristocratic and pastoral character at the same time.

The scenographic composition highlights the richness of the foliage treated in shades of deep greens, bluish and warm browns, enhanced with golden yellows and touches of red, testifying to the refined palette of the greenery workshops. T

The whole is displayed in a classic balance between nature, architecture and fauna, typical of the greenery hangings intended for stately homes.

The so-called “greenery” tapestries enjoyed immense success in the 16th and 17th centuries, produced both in Flanders (Brussels, Oudenaarde) and in France (Beauvais, Aubusson).

They decorated castles and mansions, bringing to the interior a decor of idealized and protective nature.

The presence of the bird and the pavilion places this piece in the tradition of “animated landscape” tapestries, which combined the pleasure of hunting, contemplation of nature and architectural prestige.

This piece, with its excellent state of conservation, its recent lining and its Velcro strip facilitating hanging, is ready to adorn a classic or contemporary interior.
