Object description :

"Antique Late 19th Century French Empire Gilt And Patinated Bronze Chandelier"
This French chandelier represents a striking example of decorative and applied arts from the Historicism period of the late 19th century, executed in the Empire style. Compositionally, the chandelier features a classic two-tiered form with the characteristic Empire "crown-bowl" scheme. The upper tier of smaller diameter is crowned with a decorative corona featuring six arched elements with palmettes. The lower tier consists of a wide hemispherical bowl adorned with palmettes and acanthus leaves, bearing characteristic hammer marks that evidence the repoussé technique, where metalworkers shaped the piece by working from the interior—a demanding process requiring considerable skill. Both the upper "Crown" and lower "Bowl" are topped with stylized decorative finials. The diamond-shaped links of the suspension chains with cruciform motifs reference decorative elements from medieval times. The combination of black patina (likely hot patination) and gilded details creates a striking and distinctive visual effect, emphasizing the high level of craftsmanship and individual character of the chandelier. Based on the execution style and characteristics, it can be presumed that this chandelier was manufactured by one of the French workshops working in the traditions of the renowned Parisian bronze masters of the Thomire and Ravrio school. Similar lighting fixtures were popular during the period of 1870-1900, the golden age of Historicism in Europe. They adorned the halls of bourgeois mansions, the offices of high-ranking officials, the salons of industrialists etc.
