Superb bronze mortar with a dark patina, decorated on its lower part with 4 triangular fins extending from the base.
If these finned mortars are generally classified as "Hispano-Moorish" type, reflecting the influence of the forms of the arts of the Arab conquests of Southern Europe, their specific shape sometimes allows, as here, to attribute them to a specific geographical origin.
Northern Italy or Switzerland (Corinthia or Tyrol)
15th or early 16th century (late Gothic)
Very beautiful patina of prolonged and daily use over the centuries, dark brown and shiny.
Perfect condition.
"Essential work tool for an apothecary, mortars were used to make medicines, powders and all kinds of medicinal preparations. Mortars were also used in the kitchen: the rare and precious spices were meticulously ground and then used in dishes. Mortars could therefore be a useful and symbolic gift, to be offered at weddings.
The traces of impact and wear , due to heavy use, add to the patina of the bronze to give this mortar a very authentic appearance.."
Dimensions:
10cm diameter
and 11.7cm height
Please check my other recent ads for another Hispano-Moorish mortar, this one with a rounded belly and bottom, from southern Spain (please check my last photo)
