Depicting The Ballerinas of the Paris Opera, painted around 1895 after the poster by Jules Cheret (1836-1932) "Les Coulisses de l'Opéra au Musée Grévin" produced in 1891 (see photo of the original attached to the carousel).
Lucien Berthault, 1854-1935, French painter born in Coulommiers. He was a student of Alexandre Cabanel and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A member of the Salon des Artistes Français, he exhibited from 1876. He proposed Saint John the Baptist at the Salon of 1878, then offered the canvas to the mayor of Coulommiers. Honorable mention in 1879 and 1889, he obtained a third medal in 1891. He became a municipal councilor in Neuilly-sur-Seine. In 1931, he was knocked down by a taxi while crossing a street in Neuilly, his right shoulder was broken and he was taken to the Charité hospital. He died on March 15, 1935 in Paris, at his home located on Place de Verdun, at the age of 80. Works in the Museums of Reims and Tours. Artist listed in Bénézit. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, etc.
This paper is in very good condition. No stains.
The watercolor, never cleaned, not dirty, is in very good condition, neither repainted nor repaired of any kind, nothing shows up under UV rays.
The original mat is made of paper which is a little creased but it is much less visible in nature than in the photos.
