This 8-panel Chinese Coromandel lacquer screen uses the Kuncai technique, which is engraved and decorated.
The decoration, of great quality and craftsmanship, is different on both sides. The first side depicts a court scene. Specifically, it features figures in traditional dress engaged in various activities, suggesting a scene of court life. It also features traditional Chinese architecture, structures similar to those found in gardens or palaces, and natural elements such as trees, flowers, and rocks, creating an idyllic landscape.
The opposite side features a naturalistic depiction of herons and birds, according to the characteristic patterns of oriental Chinese art.
Finally, both decorations are surrounded by a border of traditional Chinese symbols, often associated with the concepts of luck, longevity, and prosperity.
