"Oil On Canvas Signed Léon Richet (1847-1907)"
Clearing with figure. Landscape signed Léon Richet bottom left. Léon Richet, born in Solesmes, attended classes with Amboise Detrez in Valenciennes, then with Jules Lefebvre in Paris and with Diaz de la Pena, whose disciple he became, to the point of sometimes signing works jointly. His landscapes appeared at the Paris Salon from 1869 and were awarded prizes in 1885, 1888 and 1901. The official portal of the Museums of Reims mentions the following remarks from the rapporteurs of the exhibition regarding one of his works presented in Reims at the 1873 exhibition: "From Mr. Richet, landscapes and a view of Picardy, which are very firm in color and very fine in touch. Mr. Richet seems to come from both Rousseau and Daubigny (...] Like Rousseau, Richet places dark elements in the foreground which frame the main subject. He likes to play subtly with shadows and lights" or again from the critic Clarétie: "Mr Richet is a student of Diaz, it seems, but one would rather take him for a student of Dupré. He has his impasto, his warm tones, his superb torment" These words bear witness to the singular and original place of Léon Richet within the "Barbizon School". The Orsay and Reims Museums have works by Léon Richet. Let us also point out the beautiful period stucco frame.
