Oil on canvas, very large format, datable to c. 1870–1890. Signed lower (signature difficult to decipher, probably “L. Guigne”, attribution subject to confirmation.
Subject and composition.
A sweeping park landscape in autumn: in the foreground, a marble balustrade borders a rectangular pool centered by a classical fountain group with female figures. Two large stone urns overflowing with trailing ivy frame the corners of the basin; beyond, an avenue of deciduous trees in rusted foliage converses with slender cypresses on the horizon. The late-day sky is mirrored in the water, bathing the scene in copper and violet tones.
Painterly handling.
The surface shows pronounced impasto: paint laid in thick layers, in places with the palette knife, to catch the light (sparkling water, foliage, mossy stone). Water and sky combine transparent glazes with raised highlights, creating a rich materiality typical of late-19th-century naturalist landscape painting (Barbizon legacy with a decorative ambition for grand interiors).
Materials and techniques.
Oil on canvas on stretcher; heavy impasto and knife-work, superimposed glazes for transparency effects. Warm palette of ochres, Mars reds, earthy greens and bluish greys for the evening sky.
Frame.
Handsome period giltwood frame, carved with scrolls, flowers and beading. Ready to hang.
Condition.
Very good decorative condition; minor age-related wear and slight surface irregularities consistent with original impasto.
Dimensions (framed): 165 × 265 cm.
