Created in 1890, this etching was prepared by a drawing and reworked several times by Pissarro: 8 states are listed, which gradually include additions and reworks in etching and drypoint as well as scrapings. As with most of his prints, the intermediate states were only printed in a few proofs, which served the artist to evaluate his work before resuming it.
The 8th state gave rise to a larger print run with 9 or 10 trial proofs as well as 100 proofs found in the artist's studio at his death, numbered and marked with the studio stamp. These include 60 prints on Holland paper, 26 on old blue paper and 14 on Japanese paper (numbers 15 to 20 and 41 to 48), including ours numbered 15/100.
Considered by Loys Delteil to be among the most representative prints of Camille Pissarro's talent as an engraver, this Vachere au bord de l'eau was also published posthumously in the Gazette des beaux-arts of May 1, 1904 to illustrate Théodore Duret's article on the artist.
