"Large Zoomorphic Aquamanile – Silver And Gilt Bronze – Fantastic Creature, Lion – Haute époque"
Late 19th century – In the style of the Haute Époque Germany Aquamanile in silvered and gilded bronze, depicting a fantastical animal with the body of a lion. The wide-open mouth serves as a spout, while the elegantly arched rear handle connects the neck to the rump. The incised fur, the chased details and the mascarons applied to the sides recall the expressive forms of medieval goldsmithing. Aquamaniles, whose liturgical function was linked to the washing of hands, appeared in Europe from the 12th century. They often adopted zoomorphic forms – lions, horses, hybrid creatures – symbolizing power and vigilance. This example is part of the historicist and neo-medieval taste of the 19th century, a time when the decorative arts reinterpreted Romanesque and Gothic models to fuel the revival of ancient styles. Prized by lovers of the Haute Époque and collectors of curiosities, this piece illustrates the 19th century's fascination with medieval art and its symbolism. Its creation demonstrates a fine mastery of cast iron and ornamental decoration, which gives the object a singular presence.
