of The Schoolmaster – Adriaen van Ostade, Louvre
This painting by the Dutch painter Adriaen van Ostade, kept at the Louvre Museum, illustrates a genre scene typical of the Dutch Golden Age. It shows the interior of a village school, where a teacher teaches a few children.
Ostade does not seek to magnify education, but to represent with humor and realism the daily life of the people.
The light highlights the contrasting attitudes of the students, some studious, others dissipated. by Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685)
Adriaen van Ostade was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1610.
A pupil of Frans Hals, he was part of the tradition of genre scenes, representing popular life: peasants, artisans, cabarets, village interiors. Influenced by Adriaen Brouwer, his palette evolved over time, moving from dark tones to a more golden light, close to the atmosphere of Rembrandt.
Van Ostade enjoyed great success during his lifetime and left behind a large body of work: paintings, drawings, and engravings. He is recognized as one of the masters of 17th-century Dutch realism.
