"Henri Matisse – Autograph Letter Signed"
Henri MATISSE (1869 - 1954), French painter
Autograph letter to Madame Mary Hutchinson. [Paris] "132 Bd Montparnasse" November 11, 1946; 2 pages in-4°, accompanied by its envelope and a telegram.
Beautiful letter about the screening in London of the short film that François Campeaux made on Matisse, shot during the winter of 1945-1946, first in Paris then in Nice, with a commentary by Jean Cassou, writer, art critic and founder of the Musée national d'art moderne de Paris.François Campeaux was commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to film Matisse. He confirmed the date of the screening in London, followed by the film "Le Voile bleu" starring the actress Gaby Morlay to promote the visibility of the film: "Dear Madam & friend. I have just called the filmmaker Mons. Campeaux [François Campeaux, author, screenwriter, and playwright] who was commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to film about me. He gave me the following information: the film will be screened on December 4th at the HAMMERS Theater, Oxford Street. The best screening room in London. It's a new theater, a few years old. To increase the interest of the presentation, another "The Blue Veil" or "The Veil of Happiness" will be added to my film. Gaby Morlay will star. But the invitations will be sent by letter to the people you would like to indicate and will relate specifically to the presentation of my film - moreover - for latecomers, it will be re-screened at the end of the screening, which will begin with my film. So those who wish to will see it twice. The invitations will be sent from Paris as soon as possible. I thank you in advance for your interest in this matter and for sending me the guest list, and please accept, dear Madam & friend, my respectful regards… »A telegram from Matisse to Mary Hutchinson dated November 19, 1946 is attached: « Confirmation of social gathering stopped. Please indicate names of official personalities »Mary Hutchinson (1889 – 1977), was a British novelist and socialite. She joined the Bloomsbury group in 1910, bringing together the English artists and intellectuals of the time. She became its ambassador, organizing sumptuous social evenings in her two houses. She was also a model for many painters, including Henri Matisse, who painted her portrait twice in 1936.
