"Landscape By Scipione Cignaroli"
Landscape painting from the first half of the 18th century, featuring the Monte dei Cappuccini in Turin and a bend in the Po River, created by Scipione Cignaroli (Milan 1680-Turin 1745) during the period in which the master worked in Stupinigi.
The canvas depicts a landscape of expansive vertical proportions; on the left, a small hill with leafy trees, at the top of which stands a round building, identifiable as the Church of Santa Maria del Monte in Turin, which stands on Monte dei Cappuccini. The hill on which the building stands is picturesque and covered with vegetation. In the foreground, a washerwoman with clothes in her arms, and opposite her, a fisherman leaning out into the Po River, carrying a small boat with barely sketched figures. The background, strongly blue, depicts plateaus and high mountain peaks. The Monte dei Cappuccini is clearly recognizable and is a subject Cignaroli painted many times.
The painting is accompanied by a description by art historian Arabella Cifani.
