This wedding cup, sometimes called a collection cup, is typically Breton. The plain silver cup, of a perfect shape mounted with a hammer, is fixed by soldering on an elegant trumpet foot decorated by stamping with palmette motifs; the zoomorphic handles, of the dolphin model, are melted and added.
The MET holds in its collections a Breton cup attributed to Joseph Lucas, of the same date as ours (no. 48.187.14).

Le Helchat is a surname found almost exclusively in Plouigneau, in Finistère, near Morlaix. Genealogical databases record the marriage of a certain Anne Le Helchat to Guillaume Prigent on November 8, 1734. Was it her cup? Mystery...
