Persian Wool Tapestry, circa 1900
Large decorative wall tapestry finely woven in wool, depicting a courtly garden scene inspired by Persian miniature painting. Four elegantly dressed figures are shown in a paradisiacal garden among flowering trees and foliage. At the center, a nobleman in a patterned robe is seated with attendants, while a lady offers a bowl of fruit. At their feet lie symbolic offerings of fruits and vessels, including a nargileh or decorative flask.
The border is framed with a continuous scrolling floral design in indigo and gold tones, echoing the style of urban workshops such as Kashan or Tabriz. The composition reflects late Qajar taste, blending refinement and narrative detail.
Figurative Persian tapestries of this scale are comparatively rare, being intended for wall decoration rather than floor use, and closely echo the imagery of illuminated manuscripts.
