Master, 1764. "Supplier to the royal castles". He was one of the most famous cabinetmakers of his time. Jean-François Leleu is rightly considered one of the most talented cabinetmakers of his time. After an apprenticeship as a simple worker in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, he joined the famous cabinetmaker Jean François Oeben, cabinetmaker to the King, based at the Arsenal, as a journeyman. His colleague was Jean-Henri Riesener, who succeeded Oeben after his death in 1763. Leleu, disillusioned, then obtained his master's degree, which he obtained in 1764, and opened his own workshop on rue de la Contrescarpe, a workshop he left shortly after for larger premises on rue Royale. His reputation grew very quickly. He notably became the main supplier to the Prince of Condé, who ordered numerous pieces of furniture from him for his various residences. In 1780, he took on his son-in-law Charles Antoine Stadler as a partner, to whom he left his establishment around 1792. At the beginning, still under the influence of Oeben, Leleu's furniture was grandiose and sumptuous, but little by little, he acquired more sobriety. His works, then very personal, are of great simplicity, with perfect proportions and the finish of the execution as well as the choice of materials are remarkable. The Louis XV and Transition style furniture are few in number. These are works in rosewood veneer or mahogany inlaid with rosette flowers or flowered baskets and richly decorated with gilded bronze. On the other hand, Leleu produced a multitude of Louis XVI furniture, neoclassical, "à la grecque", with robust, very architectural forms. The marquetry used has regular motifs, grids decorated with four leaves or rosettes which extend over the entire surface of the square, rectangular or diamond-shaped panels, always delimited by a frame of darker wood or bronze which reinforces the large volumes of the furniture. (18th century furniture and cabinetmakers) Work from the Louis XVI period, 18th century, circa 1770. Dimensions: Height: 117.5 cm Width: 69.5 cm Depth with marble: 40 cm Depth: 36 cm In good condition, to be noted, traces of use on the marble, which do not affect the overall aesthetics.
