"Achille Beltrame 'the Convalescent Soldier', Ca. 1917, For 'soc. Anonima Grandine'"
Watercolor and white lead on paper, mounted on cardboard, titled 'The Convalescent Soldier' by Achille Beltrame (1871 - 1945). This is a preparatory drawing for the painting chosen to illustrate the 1918 Almanac of the Società Anonima Grandine. The company was founded by Assicurazioni Generali in Milan in 1890 as a separate organization with the full name of 'Società anonima di assicurativa a premi fisso contro la grandine' (Anonymous Society for Fixed-Price Hail Insurance). To promote its image and the services it offered, the company relied primarily on illustrated almanacs. The image presented here is part of a series dominated by references to war, tempered by the serene and optimistic atmosphere of villages and farmyards. Initials/signature at lower left. Non-contemporary frame, glass on glass. Milan, ca. 1917.
Condition: Excellent, small defects on the frame; signs and wear due to use and age.
