A rare 15th-century religious sculpture. A finely carved wood work depicting the Madonna with Child, likely of Central European origin. Carved from a single block, with a separate, non-contemporary base, the Virgin is seated on a throne with the Child on her lap. The monumental, frontal pose emphasizes its liturgical and devotional function.
The Madonna features an elongated face with features typical of French and Lombard Marian depictions, while the drapery of her robes, with deep, linear folds, suggests an artist still rooted in the canons of Romanesque art. The Child holds a bird in his hand, likely a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. A work of extraordinary charm and difficult to find, it is perfect for enriching collections of high-period sacred art or prestigious settings.
The sculpture has lost its original polychrome, while the base still retains traces of the original color. The statue has some missing parts, such as the Virgin's right arm (see photo), and signs of aging, but is overall in good condition.
Sculpture measures H 65 W 28 D 20 cm Base measures H 18 W 35 D 26 cm.
