Biography:
Edouard Marcel Sandoz (1881-1971), son of Édouard Sandoz, founder of the chemical and then pharmaceutical firm Sandoz, is a sculptor who expressed himself through bronze, ceramics and direct stone carving. Born in Basel and educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked primarily in Paris, where he settled in 1908. There he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. Sandoz's motto: "In art, one must love everything: nature, science, one's fellow man..." His freedom of expression was based on mastery of classical techniques, knowledge of materials, daily research into new tools, the opening of new fields, and the study and in-depth knowledge of his models. Sandoz worked with a variety of materials: marble, bronze, and ceramics. The predominantly animal aspect of his sculpted work led him to create the Société Française des Animaliers in 1933. His commitment to serving his fellow artists led him to chair the Baron Taylor Association for over thirty years, to found the Œuvre des Enfants d'Artistes, and to participate in the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris. Sandoz's talent and merits earned him election as a Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in France and the rank of Commander in the Legion of Honor and the Order of Arts and Letters.
