Renaissance style vase in Blois earthenware decorated with a salamander and the letter F (very possibly for François I), royal fleurs-de-lis, snakes forming the handles, satyr heads, putti and grotesques, horns of plenty... Marked J. Tortat Blois with the fleur-de-lis in a shield surmounted by a count's crown and the numbers 7 and 3 for 1873. Dimensions: height 36 cm - width 25 cm. Condition: perfect condition except for a small chip on the pedestal. Josaphat Tortat (Blois, April 10, 1843 – Saint-Front-la-Rivière, April 7, 1915) is one of the main painter-ceramicists of the end of the 19th century in Blois. One of his painter-decorators, Withold Arthur Just (1850-1928), took over from him in 1891 after around twenty years of collaboration.
