Large bust in white Carrara marble and griotte marble for the base. It represents the young Emperor Caesar Augustus, also called Gaius Octavus. Mid-19th century. Beautiful quality of sculpture, notably in the hair which is re-chiseled. The statuary marble has a very fine grain. This work is after the antique bust in the Galleria dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican (no. 714). Beautiful refined object typical of the souvenirs of the Grand Tour, aristocratic educational journey across Europe made by young men of the highest classes of European society from the 17th to the 19th century.
