Sei Koyanagui was born in 1896, a Japanese painter during the first half of the 20th century. Initially, Koyanagui studied in Tokyo. He then went to Paris around 1920 where he met many painters. There he established contacts with the group of artists led by his compatriot, Tsuguharu Foujita. The artist mainly painted animals and flowers, as well as female nudes, which constitute an important part of his work. Koyanagui connected Japanese traditions and contemporary French art: he thus created an individual work. His works were exhibited at the gallery of Georges Petit in 1929, as well as at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne.
