Rare pewter BAPTISM JUG in baluster shape with a quarter-round foot and goblet, large spout and raised flat-topped lid; it has an S-shaped thumb rest and a handle with molded ends and engraved with a fish accompanied by the date 1774.
Ownership mark summarily engraved by a second hand: IHR / 1805.
Unpublished hallmark attributed to Jean II SCHAEFER received master in 1758: grand lis / IIS
Height: 26.5 cm
STRASBOURG, Circa 1774.
In good condition and of good quality material, with an acquired dark patina. Mechanical cleaning can be undertaken at no extra cost at the request of the purchaser, in order to restore this jug to its original shine.
Comment: The fish is the symbol of Baptism. The Greek word ἰχθύς ICHTUS (fish) is actually the acronym for Ièsous Christos Théou Uios Sôtêr which means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
