"Japan - Double "hyotan" Sake Flask (tokkuri) - Meiji - 19th."
Beautiful Japanese Hyotan, double-flask sake flask with its original cord and wooden stopper. The stopper is attached to the cord, which is itself attached to the flask. Excellent original condition with no marks, cracks, or chipping. When traveling, having informal picnics, or simply going out on the town, hyotan were worn suspended from the obi girdle (hence the netsuke). Sometimes a cup was attached to the suspended cord, or a separate cup with its own netsuke was provided to make instant service possible. They were also used as water bottles or canteens.
