Object description :

"Carrara Marble Statue Of A Bathing Nymph By Falconet Battiglia, 19th Century"
Large sculpture in white Carrara marble representing a nude woman with an antique hairstyle advancing the tip of her foot towards the water, after the sculpture by Etienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) "Bather or Nymph descending to the bath" (the marble original of which is kept at the Louvre Museum), signed E. Battiglia, from the 19th century. This sculpture is in good condition and is of remarkable quality. Signature on the base E. Battiglia for Eugenio Battiglia (sometimes spelled Battiglio), Italian sculptor of the 19th-20th century (referenced and listed on ArtPrice) Note: some wear and scratches on the marble, tiny dirt, look carefully at the photos. * The Nymph was exhibited at the Salon of 1757, at the time when Falconet was responsible for directing sculpture at the Sèvres factory and bringing it to a more noble genre. It was so successful that it was duplicated, by Falconet himself and by other sculptors. Reproduced by numerous casts, it was distributed in bisque from 1758. The Louvre copy is an autograph marble repetition from the collection of Madame du Barry in Louveciennes. Seized during the Revolution, the statuette entered the Louvre before 1855. Falconet's success in this type of statuette is surprising for an austere artist, a friend of Diderot, who reflected and wrote about his art, to which he assigned a moral goal. It illustrates the sculptor's struggle between his ambitions and his patrons. Protected by Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), the first favorite of Louis XV (sister of the Marquis de Marigny, director of the King's Buildings, and patron of the arts), he adapted his profession to the requirements of a court sensitive to decorative elegance.
