An elegant and refined pair of candlesticks, finely chased and mercury-gilt in the period manner. Their execution, of remarkable quality, is distinguished by a chased décor of palmettes, floral motifs, and knots, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.

These rare candlesticks, dating from the Restoration period around 1820, bear the G.F mark, the signature of Gérard-Jean Galle, son of the renowned bronzier Claude Galle.

Biography:

Gérard-Jean Galle (1788–1846): Heir to a Dynasty of Exceptional Bronziers.

The eldest son of Claude Galle (1759–1815)—one of the most influential bronziers of the Empire style and a favored supplier to Napoleon I—Gérard-Jean Galle was born in 1788 into a family where the art of bronze was passed down as a cherished legacy. Following a military career in Napoleon’s Grande Armée, he took over the family workshop in 1815, ushering in a new era for the House of Galle.

A master of chased and gilded bronze, he upheld his father’s technical excellence while adding his own distinctive touch. His creations, often inspired by his father’s designs, are celebrated for their understated elegance and precision of execution. In 1819, his talent was officially recognized when he was awarded a silver medal at the Exhibition of French Industrial Products at the Louvre for his clocks and lighting fixtures. This honor solidified his reputation as an exceptional craftsman and granted him access to the most prestigious courts.

Under his leadership, the Galle workshop became a favored supplier to the French aristocracy, with clients including the Duc de Richelieu, the Marquis de Martel, and the Vicomte de La Rochefoucauld. His pieces, adorned with neoclassical motifs, embodied the refined taste of the Restoration era.

However, the July Revolution of 1830 and the rise of Louis-Philippe dealt a severe blow to his business. Facing a decline in demand for luxury goods, Gérard-Jean Galle was forced to declare bankruptcy and passed away in 1846.

Today, his works, marked with his G.F stamp, are highly sought after for their rarity and authenticity. Notable examples can be found in public collections, such as at the Château de la Malmaison and the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, where they continue to attest to his creative genius.
