Splendid oval bas-relief (a sculpture in which the figures slightly protrude from a background). In this case, the bas-relief is made of petrified limestone, also known as calcite. The artist created a matrix and then a negative mold. The mold was placed under petrifying water rich in calcium carbonate (stalactite), which completely covered it with limestone. The excess limestone was then removed from the mold. The workmanship is precise, with well-defined details that give depth and movement to the scene. It is in perfect condition, with a beautiful patina.
The elegant bas-relief depicts a Renaissance-inspired scene. The work shows a group of figures in period dress: in the center, an elderly bearded man, dressed in long robes and a hat, holds a liturgical object in his hands while conversing with a young armed nobleman, surrounded by servants and a finely carved horse. At the bottom left, another kneeling figure observes the scene, next to a dynamic hunting dog. The high level of detail in the figures, drapery, and vegetation in the background highlights the sculptor's mastery. The border is finely decorated with quatrefoil floral motifs. The work recalls typical stylistic elements of Italian art between the 15th and 16th centuries, with strong symbolic and narrative references. Period: Second half of the 19th century (Renaissance-inspired) Material: Calcite Technique: Engraved bas-relief Dimensions: cm. 25.8 x 21.6 Condition: Good overall condition, with a patina consistent with its age. A unique piece, ideal for collectors or as a decorative element of great historical refinement.
