"Etling Mary In Prayer Opalescent Glass Circa 1930"
Edmond ETLING (1909-1940). The Virgin Mary praying in opalescent white pressed molded glass. Signed "ETLING FRANCE". Art Deco period. Height 21 cm. Edmond Etling. It is not easy to establish the year in which Edmond Laurent Etling was born. His age when he opened his shop at 29 rue de Paradis in Paris, France, is also a mystery. However, he played an important role in the development of the Art Deco style and had the vision and ability to promote and cater to a long list of noted decorative arts designers in the 1920s and 1930s. The company was founded in Paris, France in 1909 and they commissioned works of art in bronze, ceramics, and glass primarily from French artists. The glass was made for Etling at the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks near Paris. The majority of Etling Glass was produced by its own team of glassmakers based at the Cristalleries et Verreries de Choisy-le-Roi, on the outskirts of Paris. 'Choisy-le-Roi' is a place name worth remembering. The glass production factories based there were responsible for creating the finest opalescent glass in Europe during the Art Deco period, and virtually every French glass design artist used the facilities based there. Etling was at the forefront from the very beginning of the Art Deco period.
