"Grotesque Mask - Kyōgen Theater - Carved Wood - Artisan Stamp - Japan 1950-60 #844"
There are about twenty kyōgen masks. This is the comic form of traditional Japanese noh theater. Painted wooden mask - artisan stamp - original box. On the box is written "kyōgen mask, Otsu type" - Inside the box, inscription on the left "made by Noma Yōmu" (?). Within a noh play, there is often a kyōgen actor to interpret popular characters (interludes). While noh is historical and tragic, kyōgen plays reflect the habits, customs and lives of common people in short comic pieces. Kyōgen never uses vulgar or ironic language intended to hurt. All dialogue seeks to make people laugh at what is not normally funny.
