"Pencil Drawing On Paper, Male Nude Sketch - Gabriele Vicari"
Pencil sketch depicting a male nude on paper - size 50 x 35 cm
Sketch by the sculptor Gabriele Vicari (1971)
He also exhibited at the Florence Antiques Biennial with a sculpture in the Frilli Gallery.
Gabriele Vicari was born in Lucca in 1971. Already during his compulsory schooling, he demonstrated a strong aptitude for the figurative arts, which led him to enroll in sculpture studies at the local art institute "A. Passaglia," where he graduated as a Master of Art and was awarded the title of "Most Talented Student." He then graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, discussing a thesis entitled "Morphological Differences in Human Anatomy." After school, due to work-related reasons stemming from his passion for art, he moved out of town and overseas to pursue his interest. He then frequented the studios of sculptor Marcello Tommasi, both in Pietrasanta and Florence. A portrait artist of undisputed merit, in 2009 he won the international "The Pangolin Award," organized by the London Portraitists Association. Specializing in sculptural portraiture, using figurative art techniques, his works are permanently exhibited in public and private collections in Italy and abroad: Denver, Victoria, Toronto, Santa Maria a Monte, Yale, Brussels, Camaiore, London, Oslo, Florence, Cefalù, Calais, Capannori in Lucca, to name a few.Among the numerous portraits he sculpted or painted are those of Harvey Goldblatt, president of Yale University, whose painting was placed in the university's hall; Armando Barbon; Colin Graham, the first director of the Classical Art Gallery of Victoria; Michael Williams; and musicologist Don Angelo Bevilacqua. Many of his sculptures are displayed in Canadian squares, such as the monument to Sir James Douglas, the first governor of British Columbia. He recently executed portraits of Gabriele D'Annunzio for the Vittoriale degli Italiani, considered by critics such as Giordano Bruno Guerri and Geirut to be the best portrait ever painted of the poet; and that of Galileo Galilei, now in Pisa; the Corsini Countesses of Florence; the bust of Carducci in Santa Maria a Monte; and many others; the Mother Assunta Marchetti in Brazil. Of particular interest is the large painted wooden crucifix in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Camaiore. He recently unveiled the statue of Saint Bernardino of Siena, located in the square named after the saint, and the monumental statue of Raimond Roger Trencavel, installed in the Piazza Albigeois at the foot of the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire in Béziers, France, standing 3.5 meters tall. For years, he has collaborated with foundries and marble workers in Pietrasanta, where he casts his portraits or models them in marble. His skill as a portraitist is also evident in his drawings and paintings. He has also established sculpture schools in Canada, New York, and Pietrasanta. Many qualified journalists and prestigious national and international art critics have used high-sounding words about him and his art: "Vicari's art harks back to the great Tuscan tradition, which has technical perfection and formal harmony as its essential rule and its principal and most authentic expressive purpose."
