Object description :

"A Large Satsuma Vase Decorated With A Maple Tree"

A large Satsuma vase, finely decorated with polychrome enamels and gilt details, depicting a majestic Japanese maple tree (momiji).

The vase bears a double signature: on the side is inscribed Shygetsu saku, while beneath the base appears Nikko-zo (“made in Nikko”).

In Japanese culture, the maple is one of the most significant symbols of autumn, associated with change, the transience of beauty, and the natural cycle of life. This iconography is closely tied to the aesthetic concept of mono no aware, the melancholic awareness of impermanence that permeates much of Japanese art.
