Japanese Byobu Screen, Meiji Era Japan
Four-panel byobu with painted decoration in ink, gold and natural pigments of peonies among clouds, surrounded by a silk brocade border.
This screen requires a little restoration to fulfill its primary function as a space divider (two detached panels) but can also be hung on a wall as a decorative painting, via a wooden structure that would hold the four panels. It is in this configuration that one can best enjoy the decoration, a bit like a bay window overlooking a garden in bloom.
Japan, late 19th century.
