Flat lock, marked US SPRINGFIELD with the iconic bald eagle emblem.
Breech marked US MODEL 1884 and serial number 493739.
Wooden stock, with inspection stamp in a cartridge from the quartermaster inspector. Butt plate marked US and E 46. Stamped capuchins.
Original iron ramrod.
This rifle, designed by Erskine S. Allin based on the Springfield Model 1861 rifle, is characterized by a new breech mounted at the rear of the barrel. Its similarity to a hinged trapdoor gave it the nickname “trap door.”
