Oscar Berchmans, bronze seal / stamp, ca. 1900
Bronze seal or stamp made by Oscar Berchmans around 1900, in the spirit of the Vienna bronzes.
The object adopts the characteristic lines of the Art Nouveau style, with a relief sculpted decoration incorporating organic and naturalistic forms. Designed as a utilitarian object (note to sigillophiles), it also testifies to the decorative work that Berchmans carried out on small bronze pieces alongside his monumental works. Perfect condition.
Biography – Oscar Évariste Berchmans (1869–1950)
Oscar Berchmans was a Belgian sculptor and medallist active in Belgium (Liège) around 1900. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège and later in Brussels, he worked with Prosper Drion, Léon Mignon, and Paul De Vigne.
From the 1890s onwards, he actively participated in the development of the Art Nouveau movement in Liège, collaborating with architects such as Victor Rogister and Paul Jaspar, as well as artists like Auguste Donnay and Armand Rassenfosse.
He created both monumental sculptures and bas-reliefs for public buildings, as well as decorative elements for furniture — notably bronze ornaments with floral or animal motifs. From 1919 to 1934, he taught sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège.
