Auguste-Nicolas Cain for Susse Frères, "Le Réveil", bronze sculpture of a French rooster, 19th century
Bronze sculpture representing a crowing rooster, entitled "Le Réveil" or French Singing Rooster. The model was created by Auguste-Nicolas Cain, animal sculptor, and produced by the Parisian foundry Susse Frères.
The animal is depicted standing on a naturalistic terrace, its beak open in the attitude of morning song. The piece bears the artist's signature on the terrace and the Susse Frères foundry stamp.
Biography – Auguste-Nicolas Cain (1821–1894)
Auguste-Nicolas Cain was one of the leading French animal sculptors of the 19th century. A pupil of François Rude, later influenced by Pierre-Jules Mêne, he specialized in the representation of wild and domestic animals, treated with naturalistic precision. His works were regularly presented at the Salons from 1846 onwards.
About Susse Frères
The Susse Frères foundry, founded in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century, is one of the most renowned publishers of artistic bronze. It distributed many models by Cain and other animal sculptors, ensuring a wide diffusion of these bronzes among amateurs and collectors.
The model Le Réveil was exhibited at the Salon of 1883 and then entered the Susse Frères catalogue, which produced various editions of it in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
