Antique Devotional Painting – Crucifixion of Christ
Hand-painted on oak panel, Munich, late 19th century (Anton Brugger workshop/distribution)
A finely executed devotional painting depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, painted in oil on an oak panel and housed in its original diamond-shaped wooden frame with protective glass. The figure of Christ is shown on the Cross beneath the inscription INRI, with the crown of thorns, wounds, and flowing blood carefully rendered. The fluttering white drapery and dark background highlight the devotional character of the work, following the Baroque tradition of South German religious art.
The reverse bears the original paper label with the trademark of Anton Brugger, Munich, one of the most important 19th-century publishers and ateliers of Catholic devotional art in Bavaria. This confirms the piece was sold or distributed through Brugger’s Munich workshop around 1880–1900.
