Schaerbeek, 1851 - Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, 1921. Belgian.
Portrait of a woman, Almah, Alima
Painting, oil on wood (mahogany)
Signed down left, titred top right "Alima"
Painting: 46 x 56 cm
Beautiful original frame with a label with the artist's name: 73.5 x 83.5 cm
On the back, a label: "Tournai Exhibition 1903 (study for a painting)"
Very good condition
Note: the almah are women who dance, sing and play music present in the harems. Considered scholars and artists, they are considered to be of a high social rank. In Egypt they are considered the descendants of the priestesses of Isis. In Arabic, alami means "who knows" or "who has learned".
Our painting is therefore the portrait of a woman of wisdom and erudition.
