Japonisme: Matchbox In Precious Wood With Polychrome Gold Lacquer, Circa 1880
Very luxurious, -and very rare- Japanese matchsafe or inspired by the Japonism fashion on end of 19th century.
From precious and hard wood, opening by a silver hinged lid, it was used to keep sulfur matches of period safe, scraper is engraved on bottom.
Front is decorated of polychrome lacquer and gold: Imperial crane under large bamboos and flowers.
Back, of two longevity peaches, courted by a bee. (see photos).
Beautiful object, I did not know that such luxurious wooden boxes existed for matches...
Good condition, very acceptable wear.
