A rare and finely crafted late Qing Dynasty Chinese silver chatelaine, complete with seven miniature opium-related tools. This ornate etui was designed to hang from a belt, serving both decorative and utilitarian purposes in the 19th century.

The central oval medallion is exquisitely decorated in repoussé with opium poppy pods, seed capsules, and leaves—clear symbolic references to the object's original function. The surrounding motifs include butterflies, lotus blossoms, and auspicious floral elements, commonly associated with longevity, transformation, and harmony in Chinese art.

The seven suspended tools are miniature and functional representations of objects used in opium preparation and consumption:

  • Opium scraper

  • Spoon or scoop

  • Tamping stick

  • Cleaning hook

  • Curved blade

  • Pick

  • Stylized sword-form implement

Each tool is individually detailed with engraved decoration and suspended from fine silver chains. The layered construction is joined by double-link chains and adorned with additional flower and butterfly plaques, demonstrating high craftsmanship.

Material: High-grade silver (acid-tested)
Period: Late 19th century, Qing Dynasty
Origin: China
Condition: Excellent antique condition with natural patina; no losses or repairs
Dimensions: Approx. 40 cm total length

A striking and culturally significant piece—both collectible and historically important as a tangible remnant of China’s opium era.
