This is William GEORGES THORNLEY born in 1857 in Thiais (Val de Marne) and died in 1935 in Pontoise, French post-impressionist draftsman and engraver of the 19th century.
Son of a marine painter, he was introduced to drawing from his childhood.
He learned painting from the landscape painters Eugène Cicéri and Mario Sirony before entering the studio of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes.
He exhibited his gouaches and watercolors at the Salon from 1878 where he won some awards, and sold them in the Georges Petit gallery.
He painted numerous landscapes throughout France, from the banks of the Seine towards Pontoise - the epicenter of impressionist painting - Provence, Brittany, Normandy as well as the Alps and the Vosges, or even Venice. He also became known for his talents as a lithographer, collaborating with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro.
His work is now present in important private and museum collections, such as that of the Tavet-Delacour Museum in Pontoise, in Osny, his town, which dedicates permanent rooms to him, as well as at the Louvre Museum, the Senate, the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes, etc.

Condition: Good condition, note a small scratch at the top of a tree, the paper has slightly warped due to the marouflage but this will no longer be visible under a frame with glass.
