Siegfried Berndt was born in Görlitz, Germany, in 1880. He began his studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and later received a travel scholarship that allowed him to travel to Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, London, and finally, Scotland. It is believed that Berndt went to Scotland to study under Frank Morely Fletcher, who had become Director of the Edinburgh College of Art in 1906, to learn how to create color woodcuts in the Japanese style.
Berndt's color woodcuts were modern for their time. He participated in numerous exhibitions.
Andreas Albert published a first catalogue raisonné in 2013, focusing on his color woodcuts.
