Biography:
Fernand LAVAL 1886 / 1966
Fernand Laval arrived in Paris in 1912 where he became friends with Maurice Utrillo and traveled the streets of Montmartre with his easel. In 1913, he married Rachel Cohenet, and in 1920, he made his first appearance at the Salon d'Automne, where he presented a painting titled "From Montmartre to Les Halles."
He also worked abroad, notably in the Netherlands, painting numerous windmills in 1927-28, and traveled to Belgium, where he painted the port of Antwerp. In homage to Renoir, in 1963, he painted Renoir's house, "La Collette," in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
His favorite subjects would always remain the heart of Paris, Montmartre, including the Sacré-Coeur, the suburbs of Paris, the old fortifications, and the Canal St. Martin. His later works are in dark tones of brown, earth, and black.
Paintings can be viewed at our gallery in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (France) on weekends.
