Antique Carved Wooden Buddhist Sutra Manuscript Cover – Tibetan Monastery
Finely carved wooden cover from a Tibetan Buddhist palm-leaf manuscript (pecha), difficult to date but certainly an early example which pre-dates the 19th century. Executed in high relief, the composition features a central seated bodhisattva figure — possibly Prajñāpāramitā or Avalokiteśvara — flanked by two attendant figures.
Traces of original red, green, and gold pigments are visible across the surface, indicating the cover was originally brightly painted and possibly gilded. The reverse is plain and worn, typical of functional sutra covers in ritual use.
Comparative Example:This piece shares a clear compositional and iconographic affinity with a Tibetan manuscript cover in the Norton Simon Museum, dated to the 12th–16th century.
