Repainted beech, pegged joints, elegy belt
Stamp mark
Dimensions: H. 91; Seat height 43; D. 45; W. 47 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1770-1780
A rare Transition-style chair, it rests on four scrolled legs topped with acanthus leaves. Horseshoe-shaped belt and backrest with ribboned rush motif. The inside of the belt is hollowed out, “elegiac,” to increase strength and lightness.
An iconic model
Although the authorship of the console legs is now disputed by Delanois, they remain nonetheless associated with Georges Jacob. He received prolific commissions over a period of fifteen years, allowing him to express his talent and creativity through his designs. This is evidenced by the chairs preserved at the Château de Maisons, others from Fontainebleau and now at Versailles, as well as a set of ten chairs and two armchairs that are very similar, sold at Sotheby's London on July 6, 2010, lot 44. These chairs, also of royal provenance, were delivered to Madame Elisabeth in Montreuil.
Condition report: seat reupholstered with silk from Lelièvre, with matching trimmings. Seat fully upholstered at the back, wear on the ends of the legs and damage.
