Authentic reliquary in chased silver, oval in shape, with openwork decoration of leafy scrolls in the Rocaille style.
Description
It is centered in a crimson red silk fabric adorned with a rich decoration of gilded paperolles and enhanced with gold thread. In its center is a relic of the True Cross presented in the form of a cross, set in a frame of gilding and filigree.
The handwritten Latin motto Ex Lign. SS. Crucis DNJC (Ex Ligno Sanctissimae Crucis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi) confirms the authenticity of the relic: “From the wood of the Most Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ”.
The whole is protected under original glass.
On the reverse, the reliquary is closed by a well-preserved ecclesiastical seal in red wax, with its two silk threads intact, sealed and unaltered - a necessary condition for canonical authenticity.
The seal is difficult to identify with certainty (probably Italian archbishopric, 19th century), but hollow letters and the outline of the coat of arms can still be seen.
Date: mid/second half of the 19th century (circa 1850–1880)
Probable origin: Italy or Papal States
Dimensions: 10 cm x 8 cm (excluding the clasp)
Condition:
Excellent state of preservation, no losses, original glass intact, seal unbroken. Old patina.
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
