"Kyoto Satsuma Plate, Yabu Meizan Circle, C. 1885"
An exceptional Kyoto Satsuma plate dating to c. 1885,
painted with a meticulously detailed scene of figures in an interior and garden
setting. The decoration demonstrates the highest level of Kyoto artistry: the
faces are executed with microscopic stippling, while the garments display
complex textile patterns enriched with raised gilding. Surrounding blossoms,
including roses and sakura branches, are rendered with extraordinary precision,
reflecting the finest Kyoto workshop tradition. The
rim chip reveals the fine-grained cream body typical of Kyoto Satsuma of this
period, with a thin glaze layer showing natural age staining. The slightly
yellowish glaze further supports its authentic late 19th-century origin, while
the soft patina adds credibility and historic depth. The reverse is marked with the
Shimazu crest above a partially overpainted cartouche, a practice known among
Kyoto decorators to obscure artists’ names on export wares. Given the
exceptional quality of the painting, the piece may be attributed to the circle
of Yabu Meizan, likely produced in close association with the Kinkozan studio.
Works of similar quality are represented in major collections such as
the Khalili Collection of Japanese Art and other leading museums. Rarely
encountered on the market, this example represents a highly collectible work of
Kyoto Satsuma from the Meiji period.
Condition: one chip to the rim and minor rubbing to
the gilt edge. Otherwise excellent antique condition with no restorations.
