Living in Nigeria, at the confluence of the Benue and Niger rivers, the Idoma people have acquired an artistic reputation for their fertile female figures and their masks with faces covered in white kaolin. Okua masks are worn, among the southern Idoma, during the funerals of important figures. They are recognizable by their stylized scarifications, a white patina and a smooth hairstyle, as well as an open mouth. The veneration and protective importance of ancestors are perhaps the most important aspect of Idoma culture.
