Artist: Alice Bailly
Alice BAILLY
Geneva, 1872 - Lausanne, 1938. Switzerland
Portrait of a young girl dreaming
Painting, oil on canvas
Signed "ABally" twice
Painting: 60 x 73 cm
Fine 19th century gilded frame: 77 x 90 cm
Very good condition
History: exhibited at the 7th Exposition nationale des Beaux-Arts in Vevey (Switzerland) in 1901 with the title "Portrait".
On the back, an exhibition label with his address in 1901 in Geneva: rue Pierre Fatio 9 and the sale price of the painting: 400 francs
Note: this is one of the earliest paintings by Alice Bally, who had not yet changed her name to Alice Bailly (with an "i"). It dates from 1901, as the exhibition label on the back indicates. The subject matter of this painting is close to that of the great Swiss painter Albert Anker, who made childhood his favorite theme. The chiaroscuro atmosphere is a direct evocation of this theme. Funnily enough, Albert Anker exhibited a painting entitled "Les petites paresseuses" at the same show...
