Virgin And Child In Boxwood - 17th Century
Charming Virgin and Child standing, veiled, otherwise crowned, presenting the Child on her right arm, which is less frequent than on the left. The latter, nude, presents the globe, symbol of his sovereignty over the world. The small size of this work suggests that it is not a statue intended for the altars of cathedrals or churches. This is the time when the Virgin descends into private piety and when its dimensions allow it to take place in oratories, chapels, homes.
