Small Spanish Painting On Zinc – Saint Veronica With The Veil Of Christ
Small oil painting on a zinc plate depicting Saint Veronica holding the veil bearing the miraculous imprint of Christ’s face – an iconography known as the Vera Icon. The saint is shown half-length, with a serene and gentle expression, holding the veil in both hands. She is dressed in a red cloak over a dark green robe, with a radiant golden halo encircling her head.
The zinc support, commonly used in the second half of the 19th century for small devotional artworks, allows for a fine and delicate pictorial execution. The face of Christ, partially cropped due to an old resizing of the plate, is painted with sensitivity and warm tones, showing a skilled hand.
The original carved wooden frame, likely also of Spanish origin, is adorned with lower scroll motifs and topped with a fan-shaped crest and stylized gothic arches, typical of 19th-century popular neo-Gothic craftsmanship.
