"The courtyard of the Mas in Provence"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Beautiful work by the Avignon painter, Pierre Grivolas, which represents the courtyard of a mas in Provence, most likely in the Avignon region. The play of light, particularly on the facade of the building, perfectly transcribes the power of the light in summer in Provence.
A student of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1864 and 1882. A friend of the Félibrige poets, he devoted himself to translating Provençal and Comtadine traditions. In 1878, he was appointed director of the École des Beaux-arts in Avignon, a position he held until his death in 1906.
Considered the leader of the New School of Avignon, he inspired many of his students, future artists, through his outdoor teaching and his virtuosity in the use of colors, including white.
The Louis Vouland Foundation in Avignon organized a major retrospective, with more than a hundred works by the artist, from November 2008 to January 2009, for which a book was published. The work presented is unpublished and does not appear in this book.
Dimensions: 27 x 35 cm without its frame and 39 x 47 cm with its gilded wooden frame.
